CHORAL SOCIETY DELIVERED MUSIC THAT SPOKE TO OUR INNER SOUL

LOUTH'S St James's Church echoed to the wonderful and rich majestic tones of Louth Choral Society during a concert to mark Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee.

Songs of Farewell featured music of a valedictory nature, described in the programme as reflective, wishful, mournful and hopeful.

It was music that certainly spoke to our inner soul and, therefore, all the more beautiful for doing so.

Dream of Gerontius ... "little short of breathtaking."
Reviews

Gerontius is one of my very favourite pieces. I studied it for A level in 1974 and STILL love it. Your performances in Louth and Southwell were hugely successful. I suspect that those of you busy concentrating in the midst of the performance may not have been aware just how successful. Thrillingly vibrant and atmospherically thoughtful by turns, John Graham Hall and Mark Wilde created powerfully different central characters from the same notes and words so skilfully. The orchestra played touchingly, powerfully and colourfully. Christopher Maltman and Leigh Wolf provided luxury casting. Martin Pickering was in total command of every detailed nuance of the score. Best of all, the chorus sang with a rare quality of musicality and sheer humanity of spirit that was little short of breathtaking. Thank you all. The memory will stay with me for many a year.

JS Bach's St John Passion: "... intense, moving, dramatic and compelling."
Reviews

On 10 April 2011, Passion Sunday, Louth Choral Society, conducted by Martin Pickering, joined with Eastern Sinfonia and soloists to perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s Passion according to St John.

From the dramatic opening, with ruminating strings and dissonant flutes and oboes, the expectation was high, and we were not disappointed when the choir entered, full of power, clarity and definition, with firm attack and dramatic intent.  Indeed this was the beginning of a truly memorable evening, intense, moving, dramatic and compelling.
